    "The Sunk Cost Fallacy"
    3 Stars
    "The Sunk Cost Fallacy"
TL;DR: If you don't get hit by quality control issues, this card's not bad...But the out of the box performance is fairly poor,(Any fast motion on the screen blurs everything), and even minor problems will require HOURS to fix, as if you need help, support is hard to get.And when you add in my first card being DOA, and the encoding glitches I had with the software, I don't think it was worth the effort. But if you're the kinda person who just want to plug something in, and hit play, and you're not picky about image quality, this will be usable!----I'm not a big streamer, nor am I a pro gamer, but I do enjoy recording gameplay at time.I recently build (fairly decent) a brand-new PC, with a AMD 3600x, and rtx 2600s gpu, loaded with SSD's and it records PC games great! So I just wanted something that could record console games as well, I had some issues with Elgato's software in the past, so I decided to give avermedia a chance!I saw some bad video reviews online, but I heard some of them had been fixed! so I paid $135 and waited for it to arrive! It showed up the next day!...dead!... Plugged it in, and the pc, no lights, not detected by the software, I tried multiple PC's... NO LUCK! Even the 'record button' on the device was brokenI should have just returned it, and gone for a different model/brand, But I really liked the Idea of PC-free recording, and it supported 480i even the new elgato cards don't! So I ordered a replacement. (Amazon made the return super easy!)The new one arrived, and worked out of the box, it lit up, and showed up in the software, so I made sure everything was up to date, and started recording! The first thing I noticed was how soft the image looked, so adjusted the record settings to the highest preset, called 'optimal', The image quality improved, but any time there was motion on the screen, it was filled with blur to the point where it was hard to make out moving objects.Again, that should have been enough to send the card back, but instead, I reached out to avermedia support, I tried their support page, their support twitter account, and asked on their subreddit, I mainly asked about how to improve the image quality overall. After almost 5 days of waiting, I finally got a rep's response on how to improve the image quality. word-for-word, it said: "we cannot improve the video quality. If you want to get higher video quality, please choose our device GC553/ GC573/GC551 they belong to software decoding."Their solution was to just buy a more expensive capture card, and to a point that makes sense, the higher end cards will generally look better, but I'm not looking for top of the line quality, but something actually watchable. But, turns out the highest preset only allows recording up to around 20mbps(auto adjusted bitrate), that should be more than enough for 1080p60, but it's not the maximum the card/software support, so I decided to try making my own preset. After all this, I still was dedicated to sticking with the card, the software gave me no information on what a better recording setting would be, so I look up some specs online, and found that 60mbps may give me the best quality from this card, I also set the quality to 'high' and tweaked a few other settings. And with some work, I was able to get MUCH cleaner recordings! (not sure why avermeida support did not recommend this.) Simply increasing the bitrate cleared up the blur, and made even free-frames look much more presentable! But, this is where I learned, how avermedia's software is significantly WORSE than elgato's! your codec is locked by your video card, only MP4 recording (h.264/h.265). no hevc high support, Autio bit rated capped at 192kbps, ONLY Constant bitrate options, no auto for manaul profiles? and no slider for video bitrate? (enter it manually, or use arrows)I get it, you don't want to overwhelm your customers with options, but when your presets are bad, and you don't give enough settings to fix them, then everyone loses!PC-free mode, caps out at about 1500kbps, (probably a limitation of the hardware) and records to MOV format, I'm not sure what form of hardware encoding is used but it could be better. And if the capture card doesn't like your SD card, there's no way to find out why, it just lights up red, and you gotta reformat or try a new card I guess? So after spending hours getting everything up and running it seemed to be working, The recording turned out much smoother, but when I brought it into my recording software, I started to notice some visual glitches in my recordings!I saw a few before, but I figured it was VLC freaking out when scrubbing through high bittrate mp4's..NOPE! Avermedia's software had ruined sections of my recording! This should have been the last straw, but I again kept trying to get the card to work,I decided to try using OBS for the recording instead, I used that for all My PC games and never had any problems, and on their website, they listed it as compatible, so I figured it was worth a shot! The first problem I ran into was that avermedia’s documentation on how to set up the card using their ‘stream engine’ was out of date, it was showing features that even their own software no longer supported.I eventually got it working, and cranked up the bitrate, and I was able to record without the massive encoding glitches, recording directly from the card lead to a few dropped frame (from the capture card, not due to OBS) But using streamengine allowed for smoother recordings. With either Option in OBS Some Blur is still added to motion, due to the capture card’s hardware decoder, but it’s still much better than the visual glitches recentral 4 gave me.Also, if you're looking to record 480i content from an HDMI enabled xbox/gamecube/ps2, you should know this will accept the signal, but it will not pass an interlaced signal to your PC, instead, you'll get 480p,I believe they just combine or duplicate the extra frames, and you can't change the setting,(even with OBS) so the resulting image may look less smooth than on your TV.So at the end of the day, I can’t even use the software made for the card, and based on the OBS recording, it seems like the main issue with the video quality is the encoding chip on the card. The card is USABLE, that why I’m not giving it 1/5 stars, but I’m seriously considering returning it, as even for the price, the quality could be better, and as avermedia said, the only solution would be a better capture card. But after all this work, and lackluster support, if I do upgrade this card, I won’t be buying another from avermedia.

BLUF: This is an excellent device for the money, and a good Swiss-army knife for a consultant or QA team to have around. It comes with all the cables, too, and they're not bad.

I bought this to record workstation demos for clients; software-only recorders are not reliable under high CPU loads, and this will record independently to a MicroSD card (U3, V30 or better).

I cannot find an English manual for this thing. There is a FAQ, but a proper manual is missing from both the box and the web site. This is important, because there are some "magic button" combos that you will have to figure out by trial and error without it-- including some very frustrating things like "headset mute".

Some information you may find helpful:

YES, it records HD (1920x1080) video at high framerates.

NO, it will not record 4K video.

YES, it will reliably run under power from a normal (500mA) USB-A port. (The manufacturer suggests bringing a USB power bank along if you're using a laptop, which is actually not a bad idea.)

YES, it really will record totally independently of the host system; all it needs is power and an HDMI connection. There is a big glowing button you whack to start and stop it-- that's it.

YES, it will also work as an OBS Studio device (one video capture device that also brings in audio; you don't need a separate audio connection).

YES, it will record HDMI audio. However, the levels are a little low.

YES, the headset jack is 4-position (TRRS) 3.5mm, supporting a microphone. If the mic doesn't seem to work, hold each of the volume buttons down for a few seconds until the mute clears.

YES, you can hear the HDMI audio passthrough in the monitoring headset.

YES, you can hear your own headset mic in the headset. It is, in my opinion, way too loud relative to the HDMI video, so you may want to move the boom out a bit.

YES, there is a mode to use it as a glorified card reader. This was done so that you didn't need to load and unload cards all the time-- I suggest USING IT THAT WAY, and taping over the card slot once the card is installed.

YES, there are some low-latency drivers available; NO, you don't have to use them. The issue is a little complicated; see the website.

When used as a standalone capture device, the native format is ".MOV".

The device is physically quite a bit smaller than I expected, and quite light. Build quality is good.

Grab one. I couldn't find anything else that was even close for twice the price.

As an avid gamer, I can confidently say that the AVerMedia GC551G2 Game Capture Card is a reliable companion for next-gen console enthusiasts who want to capture and stream their gameplay effortlessly. The 4K HDR pass-through feature ensures that the visual quality of my games remains stunning, even when I'm recording or streaming at a lower resolution. It's a game-changer for content creators like me.

One aspect that impressed me the most is the high frame rate (HFR) support. It delivers incredibly smooth and fluid motion during recordings and streams, making the gameplay look incredibly immersive. There's no jarring or stuttering, even during fast-paced action scenes. It truly elevates the viewing experience for my audience.

Setting up the GC551G2 was a breeze. With its multiple input options, including HDMI 2.0 and USB 3.0, connecting it to my Xbox Series X was quick and hassle-free. The user-friendly software provided by AVerMedia made the entire process straightforward, and I was able to start recording and streaming in no time. The software's compatibility with popular streaming platforms allowed me to effortlessly share my gaming adventures with my audience.

Another great feature of the GC551G2 is its audio mixing capabilities. Being able to balance the game audio and my microphone input right within the capture card itself was a huge convenience. It gave me more control over my streams and recordings, ensuring that my voice was clear and balanced with the game sounds.

What truly sets the AVerMedia GC551G2 apart is its competitive price. It offers excellent value for gamers on a budget who still want a reliable and feature-packed capture card. The performance and features it provides easily rival some of the higher-priced options on the market.

Lastly, I must mention the Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support. This feature synchronizes the refresh rate of my captured footage with the frame rate of the game, resulting in tear-free recordings and streams. The smoothness it brings to the table is impressive, enhancing the overall quality of my content.

In conclusion, the AVerMedia GC551G2 Game Capture Card is a dependable choice for next-gen console gamers seeking seamless gameplay recording and streaming. With its impressive 4K HDR pass-through, HFR support, low latency, and versatile features like audio mixing and VRR, it delivers exceptional performance. The user-friendly setup and competitive pricing make it an attractive option for gamers looking to create content without breaking the bank.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Right Out Of The Box For Nintendo Switch recording

I have been testing different capture cards for the Nintendo Switch for a while now & all have been disappointing.
I was very skeptical because this was the only capture card on the market with the ability to record to Micro SD. This was so shockingly easy to set up & use I felt silly for not buying it sooner.
If all you want to do is capture your gameplay, this is PERFECT. I don't know about streaming, I won't use it for that. All you do is connect it, plug in your Micro SD card & press the big AveR logo & it records. Press it again to stop recording. It really is that simple.
It records in 1080p, beautiful color & you can also plug in a headset to record your audio.
I wish they made a new version that captured in 4K to get a smoother image, but it's fine for now.

Añade muy poco delay es casi indistinguible de la experiencia real de jugar con un monitor. La calidad de captura es muy buena aunque requiere calibración de software de captura pero es de esperarse. Es bastante ligera y portátil pero por lo mismo se siente un poco frágil.

With so many capture cards on the market at different price points, I was very happy when I found one that's the perfect middle ground for new/fresh out the oven streamers that doesn't break the bank.

With good video quality and a compact size, you really can't go wrong with this little device. The only thing I would recommend though is before you purchase and set up this product, go onto YouTube and watch some setup videos. There is some software you have to download plus some playing around with the recording equipment to get this to run smoothly but it's worth every step.

For my rig, I have an older spec pc with windows 10 and I had absolutely no issues once I downloaded the required software. It was also really easy to set up with Streamlabs!

Tldr: The perfect mid ranged budget capture card for those who wish to use their switch or other hdmi devices. Easy set up, user friendly - just make sure you look up how to set up the device on YouTube.
