Buying Guide

You might love the way your hair looks after leaving the salon, but after spending hours in the salon chair instead of meeting up with your friends for lunch you might reconsider! Or perhaps the frequent appointments are taking a toll on your wallet and you looking for another option that will save you some money without sacrificing your style. At-home hair color can be an excellent choice, but with all the options out there, how do you know what’s best for you?
Before looking for the right brand you’ll want to think about what color you’re looking for. It’s not quite as simple as blonde, brown, red or black. On the box you’ll see a reference to the dye’s undertones: neutral, copper gold or ash. These will give each shade a slightly different look, so take your time and compare the different colors. But be careful! Your own hair color will also play a role in the final color outcome. It is not advised to choose a hair dye much lighter than your current shade, or you might end up with an orange color you aren’t too pleased with. Each brand will come with different benefits, so let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons.
First we’ll consider the permanent hair dye. These will provide more consistent color, but you’ll want to take care of your roots first when you apply the hair dye the next time around otherwise the hair that has already been dyed will appear more saturated with color. L’Oreal Paris Excellence Crème hair color provides a rich and consistent color in all the standard shades. The Excellence Crème is amazing on grey hairs and will saturate even the toughest grey strands. Included in the box is a pre-color serum to help protect any fragile portions of your hair. The color crème provides the rich color, and it’s followed by the conditioning treatment, which is often needed when you’re using a permanent hair dye. A comparable brand is Garnier Nutrisse Nourishing Color Crème. Garnier also provides rich long-lasting color that will confidently cover greys, but what’s great about this option is the triple nourishment of avocado, olive and shea oils! It is also the only color crème with a capsule of grapeseed oil that will help create luscious locks as you start coloring. Either of these will cost you about $7 a box which isn’t too hard on the wallet. However, keep in mind that if you have extra-long or thick hair you might need an extra box.
Considering there isn’t a huge range in price for hair dye, you might want to spend a little more for John Frieda Precision Foam Color. This salon-quality hair color is easy to apply with non-drip foam for even coverage. The color is fade resistant and can give you natural looking results.
You’ll end up with soft and shiny hair that even smells great.
You’ll end up spending around $12-$15 a box, but if you have damaged hair or you’re craving the perfect color it could be worth it to you!
If you would rather stand out in a crowd with a non-conventional color then consider Arctic Fox. This semi-permanent hair dye comes in 21 colors ranging from purple rain to iris green. The great thing about semi-permanent hair dye is that it’s easier to make changes and it is a more gentle formula which leads to softer hair. Aside from the wild hair color choices, Arctic Fox is made from only vegan ingredients and they donate 15% to help animals in need. It’s a great way to add to your style and help a great cause!
Clairol Natural Instincts is an excellent solution if you love the benefits of semi-permanent hair dye, but you prefer more traditional colors. They offer all of the blonde, brown, red and black shades you are looking for without the damage that can go along with permanent hair dye. It is made with natural ingredients including coconut oil, aloe and vitamins and will leave your hair feeling soft and smooth. The color will slowly fade after each wash and generally lasts about 28 shampoos. For some this can be disappointing if you’re hoping for a bold consistent color, but for others it’s the perfect way to have a beautiful dynamic color that’s easy to change. It’s important to note that depending on the color it may not all be gone after a month. For example if you use a black hair dye on blonde hair, don’t expect a perfect blonde after 28 shampoos!
For those who love everything henna, check out Hannah Natural hair color. It is made out of 100% pure henna leaves which means it is 100% chemical free. You’ll avoid doing any damage to your hair and it is an excellent hair conditioner. The downside is that you don’t have any color options; henna will only create a red color. Hannah Natural also will not work dye black hair, but it will provide a conditioning treatment that is all natural. Ultimately, it’s a great choice for those looking for a bold and unique red without the chemicals. Whether you’re looking for excellent grey coverage, flirty and fun unique hair colors, or a natural and healthy new style, hopefully you feel better prepared to find the right color for you!
